What Do the Snowflake, Water-Drop and Fan Icons on Your AC Remote Mean?
Selecting the wrong mode means airflow without cooling — knowing the icons removes the guesswork.
Cool Mode: The Snowflake Icon
Cool mode (usually shown as a snowflake or the word 'COOL') is the main mode used for lowering indoor temperature in summer. When selected, the compressor starts, the evaporator coil chills, and the fan delivers cool air into the room. A set temperature of 24–26 °C is generally recommended — the lower the setting, the longer the compressor needs to run.
Cool mode is the only mode that can effectively lower the indoor air temperature. If you want the room to feel cooler, confirm that Cool mode is selected and wait 10–15 minutes for the air to fully circulate before judging the effect.
Dry Mode: The Water-Drop Icon
Dry mode (usually shown as a water-drop or 'DRY') is designed to reduce indoor humidity rather than cool the room quickly. The compressor runs intermittently at low speed, producing less cooling than Cool mode, with a slower fan speed as well.
Dry mode is suited to humid but not especially hot days — such as during the rainy season. In hot summer weather, choose Cool mode rather than Dry mode if the goal is to lower the temperature. Some people assume Dry mode saves more electricity; in practice, extended use of Dry mode is not necessarily more efficient than Cool mode set to around 26 °C.
Fan Mode and Other Modes
Fan mode (usually shown as a fan icon or 'FAN') runs only the indoor fan; the compressor does not start. This mode only circulates existing room air and cannot lower the temperature. If the unit produces airflow but feels warm, immediately check whether it has been accidentally set to Fan mode.
Heat mode (usually shown as a sun icon or 'HEAT') is rarely used and is not supported by all units. Auto mode ('AUTO') allows the unit to switch between cooling and heating based on the room temperature relative to a single target temperature set by the user. Icon designs and labels vary slightly between brands — if in doubt, the original instruction manual is the most reliable reference.
- Snowflake / COOL: Cool mode, the primary summer mode
- Water-drop / DRY: Dehumidify mode, for humid but not hot conditions
- Fan / FAN: Fan-only, no cooling
- Sun / HEAT: Heat mode, supported only by some models
- AUTO: Automatic mode, unit decides based on room temperature
Fan Speed and Louvre Direction Settings
In addition to mode, the remote typically offers fan-speed settings (high, medium, low) and louvre-direction controls. Fan speed affects how quickly cool air circulates; the louvre direction affects where cool air is aimed. To cool the room evenly and quickly, try high fan speed with the louvre set to sweep; to avoid direct draughts, aim the louvre upward and let cool air naturally descend.
Remote Control Settings Verification Checklist
- Confirm mode is set to Cool (snowflake icon)
- Set temperature to 24–26 °C
- Confirm fan speed is appropriate
- Confirm louvre direction is set as desired
- Wait 10–15 minutes and assess cooling effect
- If still not cooling, investigate other causes
